Silicon steel, also named electrical steel, is soft magnetic alloy with extremely low content of carbon. The participation of silicon not only increases the resistivity and maximum permeability of iron, but also reduces iron loss, coercivity and aging of magnetism. That's why silicon steel is generally applied into electric machine and transformer core manufacturing. With multiple advantages, electrical steel plays a fundamental role in Electricity, Electronics and Military industries.
Types of silicon steel
Based on production process: Silicon steel can be divided into hot rolled silicon steel and cold rolled silicon steel. Hot rolled silicon steel has lower utilization rate, higher energy loss, which is gradually phasing out of steel market nowadays. Cold rolled silicon steel is widely used, divided into oriented silicon steel and non oriented silicon steel according to the internal grain orientation.
Based on the silicon content, silicon steel is divided into: low-silicon sheet (medium and low grade) and high-silicon sheet (high grade). Low-silicon wafers, which are regarded as motor silicon steel sheet, have a certain mechanical strength, mainly used to manufacture motors; High-silicon wafers, known as transformer silicon steel sheets, possess outstanding magnetic properties but are a bit more brittle, mainly used to manufacture electrical steel transformer cores.

The differences between grain oriented and non grain oriented silicon steel
(1) As for grain oriented silicon steel, the grains basically face one direction, so the silicon content is higher. Grain oriented silicon steel is mainly used in manufacturing transformers.
As for non-oriented silicon steel, the distribution of grains is disordered, therefore the silicon content is lower. So non grain oriented silicon steel is mainly used in motor manufacturing.
(2) Bounded by 3% of silicon content, cold-rolled silicon steel is divided into cold-rolled non grain oriented (CRNGO) silicon steel and cold-rolled grain oriented (CRGO) silicon steel.
Cold-rolled non grain oriented silicon steel has relatively low production process requirements, and the mass fraction of silicon is between 0.5% and 3.0%. The thickness of finished product after cold rolling is generally 0.35mm or 0.5mm. Its Bs is higher than that of grain-oriented silicon steel. with uniform thickness, high dimensional accuracy, smooth and flat surface, which improves the filling factor and the magnetic properties of the material.
The silicon mass fraction of cold rolled oriented silicon steel is above 3.0%, and the carbon mass fraction is 0.03%-0.05%. There’s a low amount of oxide of steel and inhibitors are required. Compared with cold-rolled non-oriented silicon steel, grain-oriented silicon steel has stronger magnetic directionality, and higher magnetic permeability and lower iron loss. Cold rolled grain oriented silicon steel, also known as cold-rolled transformer electrical steel, is commonly used in transformer manufacturing.
(3) Cold-rolled grain-oriented silicon steel can also be divided into two types: common grain-oriented silicon steel (CGO) and high magnetic induction grain-oriented silicon steel (Hi-B). High magnetic induction cold-rolled grain-oriented silicon steel is single-oriented steel strip, which is mainly used to manufacture various electromagnetic components such as choke coils, transformers in electronic instruments, etc.
